Rhee Jeremiah Costan and Adrian Miguel Lopres won the Impromptu Speech competition in Philippine International School on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.

Social Media, as it is known, is a powerful tool that the general population utilizes in many fields. Considering its assistance to various modern daily activities, this leads to the question: “Is Social Media a boon or bane for collaboration?”

“We have to disconnect in order to reconnect,” says Rhee Jeremiah Costan, a Junior High School student, as he elaborates by saying it disconnects people because others would rather use their phones in a social event than talk to each other and that it might cause addiction to these platforms which will worsen the already unhealthy collaboration.

Adrian Miguel Lopres, a Senior High student, exits the stage smiling as he finishes his speech. He mentions that humans are the most sociable animals, and would, therefore, achieve their goal even when working with strangers once they’ve established three main elements. He emphasizes that the three main elements in getting strangers to work together is to create a strong foundation; to establish a goal; and, to find common interests. He says that when a group of people has one goal, they will do everything they can to achieve it; therefore, establishing a strong foundation. He says that in order to strengthen these bonds, they must share a common interest which would break the ice.
It is not a secret that breaking the ice with a group of strangers is difficult; however, Adrian Miguel Lopres broke down the step-by-step process in answering the question, “How can you make a group of strangers a team?”

This event, facilitated by Ms. Lei Asis, went by smoothly with PISQians being able to deliver their educated opinions, leaving the audience stricken by their skills and wit. These extraordinarily talented students were Matt Molmisa and Lance Andrew Paja who won first and second runners-up for the Junior Category, correspondingly. There was also Jesron Tabajura and Celene Joyce Rebato from the Senior Category, who claimed their trophies with great pride and honor in their hearts.

“At first I was hesitant about this - this is my first competition… I had fun and enjoyed it and everything was relaxed, and all-in-all I feel really blessed to do this,” says Jesron Tabujara, when asked how he felt about being chosen as a participant.

“Actually at first, my other classmate got picked but then she quit so I got chosen which was… I thank God for this… I feel like God’s given me a chance and the competition was fun! I really enjoyed the experience,” was Matt Molmisa’s response when asked the same question.

Yes, it truly is a blessing to be able to encounter people like these. PISQ congratulates you as you are all winners in any book. Win it, Phoenix!
