In a committee consisting of more than 100 delegates, Germaine Armielle Rentoria, one of PISQ’s diligent delegates, was given the 2nd Honorable Mention Award during the closing ceremony of Georgetown Model United Nations held on November 2, 2019.

“It’s… a great honor, of course. It’s really unexpected because my preparation time was, I believe, lacking. I wasn’t able to research much and [for] some of my speeches, I wasn’t satisfied with it. But, getting chosen as that [Honorable Mention], is a very great honor and I am very grateful for that opportunity and achievement. I will use it to inspire and encourage, and as a driving force to do better in the next one,” says Germaine Armielle Rentoria of 12 STEM C when asked about how she felt in being chosen as one of the awardees in her committee. She, along with Adrian Miguel Lopres of 12 STEM C, Marjorie Funilas of 12 STEM A, Johanna Maggay of 12 HUMSS A, Samantha Isabel Facun and Frances Joy Balani of 11 HUMSS A, had represented the school in the event.

“MUN, I should say, is actually more of collaboration. It is not a competition… It is a platform wherein students from different schools share their opinion or point of view on issues that confront the people today,” says Jaspher Tapiz, the coach of this team. He emphasized how they lacked preparation time; however, let the school commend them for being able to pull through!

“It’s a funny little event where a bunch of people from all over the world come together, debating about very contemporary topics,” says Adrian Lopres. Model United Nations is a platform where Georgetown University Qatar invites students from different high schools to formally debate issues based on how the government in their assigned countries would think. Each participant is assigned their own country and would spend the three-day event representing and defending that country and their views on certain social topics. It teaches students to be more confident and collaborative in order to resolve these issues without sacrificing the dignities and beliefs of their countries.

“The MUN is a great platform and I wish that people would recognize it more as a kind of platform wherein they would be able to express their ideas and feelings. I hope that they won’t let their fears of public speaking, their fears of getting rebutted, or their fears of talking in general, I hope that they won’t let those fears hinder them from getting these new experiences. Because as you are doing it, you’re gonna lose that fear and develop the skills," words of wisdom from Germaine Armielle Rentoria as she ends the interview.
