With esteemed skills and determination, the PISQian delegates once again graced this year’s annual Model United Nations (MUN) Spring Conference hosted by Georgetown University-Qatar. The three-day event of committee sessions and moderated debates were held online from March 11 to March 13, 2021 and among the participants were 6 students from the Senior high school department and 2 students from the Junior high school department.

The Model United Nations is a student-run conference based upon the United Nations (UN) conferences, wherein students from different schools assume the roles of different foreign diplomats to which they are called as delegates. In line with UN conferences, the MUN Conference is divided into the following committees; Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC); United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); United Nations Security Council (UNSC); UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme); and Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM). With this, the PISQ delegations were as follows: Samantha Isabel N. Facun and Jesse Francine G. Aguilar (UNHCR); Julianne Carmel I. Caday (DISEC); Ieasha Angela Reeana Cuera and Carl Angelo C. Casilag (UNEP); Alexa Mae A. Bonjoc (UNSC); Rheej Jeremiah S. Costan and Gian Antonio R. Tortola (SOCHUM).

In an interview with Ieasha Angela Cuera, a 12-HUMSS student part of this year’s UNEP delegation, she described this year’s spring MUN as a “great investment of time and effort”. In accordance with the objectives of MUN, all committee topics are timely and relevant. According to Cuera, the Delegate of India, the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) committee discussed water and food security in a post COVID-19 world.

As for the preparations for the said event, Cuera gathered statistical facts and formulated possible solutions about the topic at hand. When asked about how she felt during the event, Cuera replied, “Even though it was my second conference, I was still so nervous. Nonetheless, I felt happy because I had the chance to experience GUQ's spring MUN for the first and last time.”

As for her realizations and takeaways after the event, Cuera acknowledged how this student-run UN simulation is a great platform to educate and raise awareness for the different social issues that the world is facing. “I must say, a lot of students nowadays are aware of political issues or societal problems which is amazing. At least, less people are ignorant and they are open to different points of views. I must say that it was an eye-opener for each and every one of us that we should care more because we are humans. Especially as a HUMSS student, it made me realize to amplify my voice more rather than staying stagnant.”

After a great deal of speeches, debates, and moderated caucuses, the PISQian delegates are commendable for their exceptional efforts on voicing out their views and suggestions for resolutions as they take part in the said event. Moreover, the DISEC delegate, Julianne Carmel I. Caday (12-STEM D), was awarded Honorable Mention after her outstanding performance in the conference as a Delegate of Afghanistan. The PISQian delegates have manifested great skills and intelligence during the conference, which exhibits the capability and competence PISQ students can offer.
