The Junior High School Department brings back honor to PISQ once more with their outstanding performance in the Qatar Debate (Preparatory Girls Division) last November 21, 2020.

These amazing young girls who participated in the said event were Maria Beatrice B. Endaya, Sheikha Maria I. Bisquera, and Antoinee Nimeesha M. Angeles, all currently in ninth grade. They were mentored by incredibly talented coaches, Ma'am Jean C. Dacudag and Ma'am Mary Grace P. Manalo.

In the debate, three difficult motions had been argued. The first motion that these girls had to defend was that "this house would only provide aid to nations that pursue environmentally sustainable development." This had been successfully defended by the Preparatory Girls Debate Team of PISQ, making them the victors in the first round. And although claiming this round, there was still a long day ahead for these young women.

While proving successful in the first round, an unfortunate bump in the road had shaken the team, making them lose the impromptu debate round with the motion "this house does not regret the Snapchat/beautification filters." The PISQ Preparatory Girls Debate Team had been assigned as the opposition team to which they were not able to defend.

Despite that one loss, the team was able to rise back up upon winning the third and last round of the debate. They were able to defend the motion that "this house would significantly relax labor regulations in times of high unemployment (e.g. workplace health and safety, minimum wage, working hour restrictions, etc.)" as the opposing team.

The PISQ Preparatory Girls Debate Team was quite excited for the next debate season. In the words of Antoinee Nimeesha M. Angeles, "For my first time competing, the whole debate was just phenomenal. I had learned a lot from the other debaters as well as the judges." Antoinee Nimeesha M. Angeles is a passionate young individual who had been extremely enthusiastic about sharing her experiences in the event and she also mentioned how she would love to continue participating in such debates.

In the end, it is safe to say that these young debaters are one of the most inspiring sets of young people in today's day and age. Considering the ongoing pandemic as well as their academic responsibilities, these girls were still able to make not only their coaches proud, but also their families, and especially, their school.

“Conviction is the key to persuasion, and persuasion is the key to success.”

Ronald Angelo M. Garcia of the Phil Int’l MRW team, Ranked 1st out of 30 teams

On November 28, 2020, the Qatar Debate (QD) Center opened its doors - virtually - to Junior High School students in Qatar. Six JHS PISQian students were given the opportunity to participate in the Preparatory Qatar Debate Boys Division through the famous online application, Discord.

The six delegated students formed two teams to represent PISQ. The members of the first team, Phil Int’l MRW, were Mark Erwin P. Pesino, Ronald Angelo M. Garcia, and Walfred Wayne P. Zurbano. The second team, Phil Intl’l MML, included Matt Karl Randell B. Magnaye, Lance Andrew V. Paja, and Matt Gabriel G. Molmisa. Under the guidance of their coaches, Ms. Cristina De Los Santos and Ms. Lovely San Pedro, the young debaters prepared through a series of research and mock debates, and all of these endeavors were truly worth it.

The organizers of the Preparatory Qatar Debate prepared three rounds for the participants. The PISQian students carrying the name of their school were expected to interact and respond to students from other schools in Qatar. For Magnaye, “debating with other schools was very refreshing.” At first, he says, he felt nervous but nevertheless, it was still a fun experience.

Beginning the event with the first motion, the students were to discuss that “the house would only provide aid to nations that pursue environmentally sustainable development.” With their thorough preparation, it was no surprise that Team MRW of PISQ, opposing the motion, bagged the first round against PIS (Pakistan International School) WAU Team.

Proceeding to the impromptu round, all of the teams discussed the motion that “the house believes that schools and universities  should continue teaching primarily online even after Covid-19.” True to the current situation of the students, it was a topic that all is familiar with yet it was still surprising - perhaps even challenging for the students. Despite being taken aback, the PISQ teams once again prevailed with Team MML as the proposition team and Team MRW as the opposition. Both teams were hailed as victors of the second round against Hamza Prep MAS and Stafford VMA (respectively).

The final round to conclude the event presented the motion that “the house would significantly relax labour regulations in times of high employment.” Team MRW of PISQ, as the proposition, gave an outstanding performance for the final time, earning them another point for the third round against Birla GBH.

With the excellent debating skills of the students, PISQ Team MRW acquired the 1st rank out of the 30 teams present in the competition. PISQ Team MML, on the other hand, ranked 23rd but their efforts did not go to waste.

Garnering a total of 4 points, PISQ will be recognized and awarded by the Qatar Debate League but the true reward for the students was the experience of bearing the name of PISQ and soaring high to learn and discover.
